Following a bit of inspiration from John Castle at the CS register I've got details here of an easy fix for when the indicator telltale lamp on the dashboard only works once or twice then stops. Basically the indicator relay needs to draw a certain level of current through the circuit or the dash lamp doesn't light, this is designed like it is to warn you that you must have a bulb out in the circuit. You'll often find that the lamp flashes once or twice then ceases, this is due to the resistance of a warm bulb filament being a little lower than a cold one - the tolerance of the system is so small that even that can stop the lamp lighting. As the wiring gets old the resistance increases which reduces the current being drawn through the indicator relay circuit for the dash lamp.
So the easy fix is this - wire a 6.8 ohm resistor in parallel with the indicator bulb in the boot, all this does is draw about 10W of extra current through the circuit, which if all the bulbs are good should be more than enough to get the relay working again.
To be honest John did the maths and the installation guide for this on the CS, but the principal is so similar for the 2002 I thought it might benefit someone! I made it easy to fit by using a spade terminal doubler on the bulb end and a ring terminal screwed to the main boot earth point, takes all of about 5 minutes to do, and most of that is getting the boot boards out of the way. That way its completely reversable and involves no cutting of wires anywhere in the system. Works a treat on the touring, and the round rear lamp 2002s. For the square rear lamp cars the principal can be used, but all the lamp wiring is soldered onto the terminals on the srl cars, so theres no way to do it without soldering it in.
The ring terminal screws to the boot earth, and at the other end you simply plug the indicator feed terminal on the spare terminal on the doubler, which then plugs onto the original indicator bulb terminal. Done.
